This workshop will focus on the art-making inside of the practice of contact improvisation. We use our base in the physical skills and sensitivities of contact improvisation to explore a kind of collaborative art-making of personal experience… the poetics of contact.
Poetics … the metaphor of written or spoken poetry gives us an expanded vision of how we might play in contact, exploring touch as a poet explores words, looking at multiple layers of perspective on what is happening and playing deliberately with intention, impulse, availability, and feeling

Este taller enfocará en la parte interna de hacer arte de la práctica del contact-improvisación. Partiremos de los recursos físicos y de la sensibilidad del contact como base para explorar una especie de hacer arte colaborativo desde la experiencia personal … la poesía del contacto.
Poesía… la metáfora de la poesía escrita o verbal que nos aporta una visión más amplia de cómo podemos jugar con el contact, explorando el toque como un poeta explora las palabras, fijándonos en las múltiples capas de la visión de lo que está ocurriendo y jugando deliberadamente con la intención, el impulso, la disponibilidad y el sentimiento.
Buscamos la poesía en la experiencia del peso, presión, fuerzas complejas, texturas del toque, intención y soltar, movimiento complejo y sencillo a través del espacio.
Exploraremos la velocidad y las relaciones espaciales no sólo como cualidades abstractas, sino también como aquello que repercute en la Experiencia Sentida del contact…
Construiremos interacciones precarias- físicas y relacionales- que nos retarán a estar presentes y nos ofrecerán la posibilidad de encontrar un sentimiento de lo poético. Un’opportunità per chiunque sia interessato ad esplorare la potenzialità espressiva della voce scoprendo la gioia dell’improvvisazione vocale sulla base di canti e canzoni. Ricollegheremo la voce e il corpo attraverso una serie di esercizi vocali e fsici attraverso untraining attoriale pratico e spirituale per comprendere la connessione intima alla nostra voce e per ascoltare gli altri più da vicino. Le basi per trovare questa consapevolezza verranno trasmesse attraverso strutture quali:
• Suoni e canti in cerchio, parole e gesti, sintonizzazione
• Lavoro corporeo in gruppo, orchestra vocale
• consapevolezza anatomica e respiro
Inizieremo quindi un viaggio verso l’evoluzione della voce esplorando dialoghi “primitivi” dal respiro alla glossolalia, fno ad arrivare a forme più strutturate quali testi/parole da un lato e musica/canto dall’altro, attraverso giochi in gruppo e in coppia. La parte fnale del laboratorio si concentrerà su forme e tecniche di canto partendo da melodie di base fno alla polifonia,per creare attraverso strutture d’improvvisazione una forma contemporanea e folk di canto e danza.Questa ricerca vuole scoprire quale importanza ha il canto e la canzone nella cultura contemporanea, nelle storie personali e come il corpo può favorire il rilassamento della voce in un contesto collaborativo di supporto. L’obiettivo del laboratorio è inoltre quello di esplorare e arricchire le modalità espressive della voce in relazione al nostro corpo per migliorare la nostra consapevolezza teatrale e vitale.

è una Performing Artist & Cantautrice (Infamous Karaoke Star)nata in Australia e cresciuta in Inghilterra. Vive a Berlino e lavora internazionalmente come assistant musical director e performer insieme al suo partner Javier Cura. La sua ricerca si focalizza sulla relazione tra corpo e voce. RE-EDUCATION OF THE BODY – Klein Technique as taught by Barbara Mahler
In the morning portion of this workshop we will focus on a movement technique that works with the premise that the requirements of movement in daily life and dance are essentially the same, and will provide the underpinnings to support all styles of movement/technique and improvisation. The purpose of the “stretch and placement” class is to re-educate one’s body with an interweaving of theory and practice on a physical, intellectual, and organic level. The result is a clarity and sureness of movement, and a new level of understanding the innate intelligence of the body. It has its roots in 30 plus years of investigating and teaching the essentials for efficient body use. We work at the level of the bone, not the traditional level of the muscles. In order to move most efficiently it is necessary to let go of the muscles that hold us back from moving and fix the body into a set and locked configuration. When the bones are aligned we become connected, powerful and strong. The body becomes efficient and alive.
In the afternoon class we will focus on the practice of the principles explored in the morning, working with improvisation and movement exploration, leading us towards the formulation of an informal performance/showing. The movement will be created by the participants of the workshop. One of the ideas we will work with are various initiations in the body to better facilitate movement sequencing, becoming both grounded and free. As the work also focuses on helping each individual student work with their own body structure we will enjoy both a consistency and surprise in the our movement.
The workshop will culminate in a performance/showing of the explored material, Friday, June 17, at 8:30 pm with a group piece of the students.
Barbara Mahler has taught daily classes for 27 years plus, educating and teaching (with, and inspired by, Susan Klein) a generation of dancers. She has traveled extensively around the globe, teaching/performing/choreographing, widely respected and. active in the development contemporary dance technique. Essentially self-taught, she brings to her classes the perspective, understanding and experience of working on her own movement re-education. Barbara was a Movement Research artist in residence for the 2000-01 and 2006-08 season, is a movement consultant at Hunter College, NYC, and is on the artist advisory board of BAX. She is a recent graduate from the MFA program at the University Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She also maintains a private practice in Zero Balancing and other healing modalities.

In this second edition of the T&P Festival and first edition of the T&P experiment we hope to take you on a journey exploring the (al)chemical edges of Contact Improvisation. We ask ourselves what happens when we stop ‘dancing’ contact and just start doing it. Can we look beyond the weight sharing, lifts and spirals and find the essence of what it means to be in Contact with someone?
The Touch&Play Festival takes place from 23-27 June in Cardona, a picturesque little village an hour from Barcelona, in a large 14th century aristocratic home converted into an arts centre. Intensive teachers include Felix Ruckert (Germany), Jess Curtis (USA), Karl Frost (USA), Astiko (Germany/Spain), Jessica Walker (Chile/Spain) & Benno Voorham (Netherlands/Sweden). Workshops, labs and more will also be provided by the T&P researchers from the Touch&Play Experiment (18-22 June)

Angela Doniy is a dance improviser, choreographer and a teacher oriented to contact improvisation and contemporary dance. She was born in Kishinev, Moldavia. She was educated at the High School of Culture, St-Petersburg. After graduation in 1985, she was a theatrical choreographer for 10 Years. Since 1999 she is living in Moscow, and teaching Contact Improvisation, Improvisation and Movement Development.
At the moment her passion is to build the “Dance House” in the Nature.

Creative acts of the embodied mind are the means by which dancers non-verbally interrogate borders, enter other bodies, and define the dimensions of internal and external space. Through mindful acts, identities appear then vanish, self-knowing becomes a playground and environments merge with inner space. Working with the mind of the dance and the dance of the mind, this highly physical workshop will take us to the edge of our boundary definitions as it encourages bold acts of physical and mental extension. Building movement potentialities that encompass the tactile physicality of mind, this workshop trains creative action in ensemble dance improvisation and Contact Improvisation. Geared toward interpersonal actions within an ecological and enactive understanding of selfhood, it will ask that dancers become highly tuned to re-cognizing context and its making. Here, we will learn to act with the kind of creative support that clarifies our purpose and our presence, bringing the world and the dance to life. We will reach to find the materials of non-verbal communication as we explore the agency of presence, the speed of awareness, unconscious cognition, and the conditions of environmental imagination. This workshop bridges full physicality and enhanced technical skill building with changing states of awareness. We will move within a spectral array of movement possibilities as we balance the softening of physical release with the clarity of directed action. The purpose of this workshop is to inform your dance research by challenging binary ideologies as we expose the mindbody to new potentialities.
Structured to train technical as well as creative skills, this workshop will build toward an improvisational performance. Each day will be spent in theoretical discussion and physical/mental training as well as composition and practice. In this work we will investigate the resonant webs of awareness derived from movement scores that direct and modulate attention as the bases for compositional structures.
This workshop will culminate in a performance. We will be developing works constructed by students, duets based on the Geometry of Attention, and a score for the ensemble, Restless Peace.
Nita Little engages in an investigation of the dynamic aspects of embodied states through the performance, pedagogy, and creative research of dance improvisaton. She participated with Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith and others, in the explorations that became Contact Improvisation in 1972 and has been significant in its emergence and development. Her work on the embodied mind and the “meaning” of attention dates back to the early 80s when she initiated a curriculum, The Mind in Motion. This work explores the range of experiential states of the embodied mind and reveals principles that define Contact Improvisation as well as ensemble dancing. She collaborated in numerous performing companies introducing Contact Improvisation throughout the United States and then initiated a number of performance groups. Her performance practice is a mix of both formal and improvisational choreography that utilizes scores.
Nita has received funding and support through the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council, and the NEA/Dance USA National College Choreography Initiative.
Over the years Nita has been both faculty and guest artist at numerous colleges and universities including New York University, California Institute for the Arts, Texas Christian University, Temple University, Tufts University, Scripps College and UC Santa Barbara.
Nita teaches and performs regularly at national and international dance festivals, previously: São Paulo Meeting, The Rio Festival, Rio de Janeiro, ImPulsTanz, Vienna, The Side Step Festival, Helsinki, Kontakt Budapest International Improvisation Festival, ContactFestival Freiburg, Germany, the Zip Festival, Italy, the Seattle Festival of Alternative Dance and Improvisation and the West Coast Contact Improvisation Festival, Berkeley California. Nita is a PhD candidate and is writing her dissertation toward her doctorate in Performance Studies at The University of California, Davis.

Workshop will take place 23-26 of June (Thursday-Sunday) in the building of primary school nr 61 in Łódź (central Poland). The school is situated very close to Łagiewnicki Forest, the biggest forest within the city area.
NATURAL MOVEMENT – SOFTNESS AND STRENGTH
In this workshop I would like to share what I am fascinated, interested and focused for many years in dancing – how to move easy in natural way. We are looking how to find strength by softening our bodies.
By relaxing the muscles system of body we open, awake space in joint and bones which provide sensitive and flexible connection to all body. Body is getting sensitive and is tuned into listening and responding to the present movement situation.
Soft body without unnecessary tensed muscles feels skeleton, which is alert and strong for supporting own and partner’s body. We are working with simplicity and clarity. This will bring more awareness and articulation to dance. The way of moving will offer soft, light, fluid and continues quality giving the appearance of effortlessness. Relaxing and finding skeletal support will make possible to move with greater flexibility, range and strength. Soft and strong body is having the freedom to dance.
Ilona Keňová is Czech dancer and dance teacher living in Finland. She graduated as Master of Dance Art from Music Academy of Performing Arts Prague. She is teaching and performing contemporary dance and contact improvisation. In here work she is searching for relaxation in movement, use of physical forces and effortlessness. She is part of organizer team Finish CI festival Skiing on skin.
The workshop will be non-profit and collectively organised, hence we would like all the participants to take some responsibility for it. We will probably cook dinners in teams, share cleaning and shopping duties. Together it won’t be much work :)
LEVEL OF WORKSHOP: Workshop is for people with some previous experience in contact improvisation. Ilona will obviously go through CI fundamentals, but it won’t be the main focus.
