Dark Dance is contact dance with blindfolds. A totally illuminating, delicate, wild experience of personal and collective movement. What can we learn from the darkness? Do we move and sense differently in the dark? Do we connect in different ways? How far does it go?

This is a sensual, non-sexual dance exploration. You should be comfortable touching and being touched, and working with your own attraction and repulsion, as well as be able to move carefully, attentively, and respectfully in a space with others.

Sometimes there will be music, sometimes silence. You are free to sing or sound as you feel, but please speak only if necessary.

This is a sober event. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. Bring your own blindfold if you prefer. Mindfolds, where you can keep your eyes open without any light getting in, will be available for $20 or to rent for $2.

Every Saturday 7-10

No matter your level of experience, from beginner to advanced contacter, you are invited to join our playful, friendly, safe, and inclusive gathering from 9:30 am onwards.

9:30 am-10:30 am: Skills, Exercises, and Explorations (rotating teachers)
After a brief group warmup, learn (or deepen your understanding of) foundational contact improvisation skills, then put those skills into action with exercises and explorations. All levels of experience welcomed and engaged!

10:30 am-noon: Playful Contact Improvisation Jam
Opening circle at 10:30 is followed by a different brief group opening score each week, then open jam with a closing circle at the end to harvest the fruits of our experiences. Some have asked: “what exactly does ’playful” mean" or “Why call it ‘playful jam’ and not just ‘jam’?” The answer: recognizing that any contact improvisation jam can include playful qualities, we carry out an intention for extra, pervasive spirit of play in this jam. We often make “playscapes” using big gymnastics blocks, and incorporate “toys” like balls and hoops in our jam.

Contact Improv for Actors
929 East 2nd St #105, Los Angeles, CA 90012 USA

Spring Workshop with Michael Doonan

Contact Improv for Actors explores the fundamentals of physical preparation through stretch, strength, and alignment; and the relationship of the actor to the physical environment, to the group, and to a specific ‘other’. The result is an instinctual, unpredictable, and undeniable presence.

Every actor has the potential to develop these instincts, skills, and presence regardless of size, weight, or previous training, and this is achieved through a combination of physical and mental preparation.

Michael Doonan holds an M.F.A. in Acting from UC Irvine, where he now teaches Contact Improvisation with Annie Loui, a heralding force in this work. Michael has studied with international theatre artists at the Grotowski Institute in Poland and also with the Moscow Art Theatre and Harvard/ A.R.T. in Cambridge, MA.

Time: Sundays 2-5 pm. Begins 3/6/11. Ends 4/10/11.
Place: Loft Ensemble/ 929 East 2nd St #105/ 90012
Price: $200 total. Payment plans available.
